A French explorer, named Rene Robert Cavelieur, also known as LaSalle, was the founder of Kingston, in 1673. He needed a fur trading post and named it Fort Cataraqui and later Fort Frotenac. It was amalgamated with Pittsburgh Township in 1998 to form the current Kingston, which is also the county seat of Frotenac County.
